Condition
In overall good condition with minor scratches and surface dirt, notably in the crevices, consistent with age and handling. A few minor chips are visible along the edges with more consistent lacks to the lower corners - to one vertical angle. There are a few fissures to the ban elements consistent with the material and a few splits to the inlays, with joints visible. Small circular holes are visible to several plaques, probably for new nails. The wrought iron lock with some rust. One wooden border inside the casket is partly missing and the red velvet upholstery fairly worn.

The chessboard at the underside of this type of casket traditionally designated them as game boxes. They are nowadays considered to be wedding caskets, decorated with courtly and hunting scenes. A number of them are in museums, including one in the Louvre Museum (inv. no. MRR 80) and one in Cluny (inv. no. CL15348). Another one, very similar, was sold by Sotheby's London, 5th December 2017 (lot 35).
