Jeanne-Modeste-Aurélie Lemerre was one of Alphonse Lemerre's two daughters, the famous poetry editor from the second half of the 19th century. Alphonse met Henri Cros through his brother Charles, among the poets he published with Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé. In 1872, Henri met great success with a portrait of Jeanne Dumas, the daughter of another renowned litterary figure, Dumas-Fils.
