Condition

The bronze is in overall very good condition, with wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. There are remains of a dark brown varnish and some vert de gris visible in the crevices. A fews fine casting flaws and minor dents visible to the surface of the bronze at several places. Very good quality cast, with fine chiselling and precise in all details. The later ebonised wooden base with a few minor dents to the edges, and a small vertical split. Great cast of a rare model.

This exceptional small bronze of a Mother and Child is of outstanding quality. It is one of the rare existing examples of this model, mentioned for the first time in 1700 in the inventory after André Le Nôtre's death, amongst the small bronzes in his collection (no. 318 and 327).
The bronze in the Wallace Collection, London, is considered to be the best known version of this model, another one is in an American private collection, formerly in the collection of Baron Boissel de Monville (1794-1873), in Paris. A third version of lesser quality is in the Louvre Museum, Paris (inv. no. OA 3995).
The present bronze distinguishes itself by the quality of its cast with precise and crisp modelling, its warm light brown patina, and the intimate subject illustrating the tender relation between mother and child.
