Condition
This is a lovely chair of bold proportions. One scrolled ear replaced. In good restored condition. End of arms shortened. Old marks and scratches. Repaired breaks to the arm joints, these repairs include later screws visible to the underside. These historic repairs do not detract from the piece overall. This armchair made £23,900 at auction (hammer plus premium) in 2004 at Christie's where it was acquired by Stanley J. Seeger.

There is an advert for C. Fredericks & Son, London in Apollo from June 1970 which features an armchair which is possibly ensuite. Also see a mid-18th century given example by Richard Hewett (Nancy Goyne Evans, 'A History and Background of English Windsor Furniture', Furniture History, 1979, pp. 24-53, pl. 84) for comparison. An almost identical mahogany chair, although with scrolled arms, was sold Christie’s London, Important Furniture, 22 April 2004, lot 29.
