Condition

Minor damage around margins with some parts retouched, most evident in sky areas. In the background around his true left shoulder a mark has been partly reduced.

The sitter was born in the Catherine Palace, St Petersburg, the fourth daughter of Emperor Paul I and his consort Sophie Dorothea of Württemburg. In 1809 she married her cousin, Duke George of Oldenburg (1784-1812) and they moved to Tver, to the north of Moscow. She gave birth to two sons but after only three years of marriage Duke George died.  In 1816, the Princess married Crown Prince William of Württemberg, with whom she had two daughters. She died, aged only thirty, in January 1819.
