In his costume and set designs for Soleil de Nuit Larionov reinvented Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Snegourotchka (Snow Maiden) as a pagan celebration of the sun-god Yarilo. A choreographic debut of Léonide Massine, the ballet premiered on 29 December 1915 at the Théâtre nationale de l'Opéra for the benefit of the British Red Cross Society.
