This charming Moghan has some unusual motifs of note. The border design, for example is very interesting and would seem more in place with the Chelaberd, ‘Sunburst’ or ‘Eagle’ Kazak rugs, see lot 79 for a beautiful example of the type exhibiting almost exactly this border. The inner guard also unusual, a similar seen in the ex-Wher Chajli within this sale, lot 39. Also a highly unusual inclusion is the ‘rams horn’ motifs seen to the sides of the field. An example of a Moghan rug with the columns of octagonal motifs with polychrome lozenges within a quatrefoil ‘rams horn’ motif laid onto an ivory ground divided by ‘walls’ with lozenges between the octagonal guls see Sotheby’s, New York, 16 December 2009, lot 43. "I had the pleasure to know Professor Marschall, from Hamburg, a collector in multiple fields, including carpets, which relaxed him after his long days as an architect." (EH)
