the rectangular base veneered in lapis lazuli, the micromosaic panel set into the lid of a silver-gilt box with leaf-chased frame, overall 17cm, 6 3/4in; and a pair of rectangular 'gold mosaic' and marble paperweights with brass swing handles and text: P SAI MARIA and P SAI ADELAIDE, Venice, circa 1840, each 11.5cm, 4 3/4in

Princesses Maria (1821-1844), who died unmarried, and Adelaide (1822-1855), later consort of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia, were the firstborn daughters of Archduke Rainer Joseph of Austria and Princess Elisabeth of Savoy. They were followed by six sons.

Condition

Overall very good condition. The lapis lazuli panel with very light surface scratches, a tiny chip to the lower front right corner. Slight wear to the front corners of the paperweight with the mosaic reading 'P SAI MARIA', the top right corner with a very small chip.
