In overall very good condition with minor surface dirt, notably in the crevices, and wear to the patina consistent with age and handling.

The terracotta bozzetto of this subject was modeled in 1870, shortly after the birth of the first son of Carpeaux. The posthumous bronze casts of this model were made at the request of the family at the beginning of the 20th century and executed in few copies.
