Condition
Very good condition overall. Marks, chips, scratches and abrasions throughout consistent with age and use within the culture. Small crack to proper left of chin and another very minor to the centre of the chin. Excellent preservation of the pigment in general although some wear and flaking in places. Good patina on red pigment and reverse. Small label bearing Elizabeth Pryce collection inv. no. EP-74 on reverse of figure.

Dans son commentaire d'une oeuvre très apparentée, Alan Wardwell souligne à propos du peuple Warasei: « Les populations qui vivaient le long du Haut Sepik et de ses affluents pratiquaient un certain nombre de rituels associés à la récolte de l'igname - chacun nécessitant l’utilisation d’un type de personnage sculpté ». Cette œuvre saisissante, représentant un esprit de l’eau, aurait été utilisée en paire, dans la deuxième des trois cérémonies, appelée minja ma. Le long corps est orné de motifs triangulaires, peints de pigments noirs et blancs figurant des feuilles de bananier, tandis que les formes ajourées sur la ligne médiane représentent les anneaux d'un serpent (yerakwant). Ces éléments et les couleurs très vives s’associent pour exprimer les qualités prodigieuses des êtres surnaturels qu'ils incarnent.
