Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are some areas of paint loss, most notably in St John's back near his proper right armpit with associated retouching, in between the lamb's right leg and the saint's stick (as well as a small spot in the stick) with associated retouching, two in the lower right-hand corner, in the upper left-hand corner and along the left edge. Visible retouchings are scattered throughout the saint's flesh tones and hair, as well as in the lamb and background. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, milky varnish underneath which these are visible, but it is difficult to discern much else. In overall moderate condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
