Condition

Overall the condition of the alabaster is good, with minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are minor chips and abrasions to the high points throughout. There are a few small areas of restoration, including to the nose and forehead. There is a loss to the attribute in the proper left hand; a remnant of its extension is at the proper left shoulder. There are further small chips to the edges at both sides and the bottom. There are a few remnants of polychromy, including at the proper right sleeve, and the drapery on each side. There is wear to the mount, including fraying to the fabric.

In his seminal work, Francis Cheetham lists only thirteen known alabaster reliefs which feature Saint Bartholomew - three of the Saint's Martyrdom and ten individual representations of Saint Bartholomew, including the present lot. Compare also to fig. 12 (op. cit.), in Oscott College, Sutton Coldfield - however the present lot shows higher quality in the carving, particularly in the hair and beard.
