Condition

The relief is a fragment from a larger ensemble, and as a result there are losses to the proper left side of the figures. The piece has been placed outdoors in the past, and consequently there is weathering to the stone throughout, which has caused minor erosion to the surface. There are some further minor losses, including to the nose and mouth and proper right hand of the man on crutches. There are a few rust-coloured stains, and a few further dirt marks. There is a small reattachment, with glue residue, to the proper right hand of the figure on crutches. There are two small holes to the reverse, one with plastic fill. There is minor wear to the modern metal base, including some scratching.

The drapery style and the treatment to the hair and faces of these arresting figures, with almond eyes and undulating hair and beard, recall sculptural representations emanating from Eastern France, in particular the Lorraine region.
