The work is in good condition, the canvas is lined, craquelure throughout, most notable in the lighter tones. UNDER UV: A small spot on her cheek as well as 3 larger areas on her dress and as well as a few other touches throughout, all fairly minor.

The sitter, who is likely Mary Hale, Lady Coke wife of Sir Thomas Coke (1674-1727), was one of the Maids of Honour to Queen Anne (1665-1714). We are grateful to Malcolm Rogers for endorsing the attribution to John Closterman on the basis of photographs.
