Condition

Canvas is lined. The painting is beneath an old discolored and slightly dull varnish. In some areas the image reads strongly, for example on the left, and in others some details have lost some definition. There is a spot of loss in the center left sky above the figures, with some associated retouching, and a spot of loss in the upper right sky in the clouds. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish which is difficult to read through In areas. UV light also reveals some scattered small spots of more recent retouching throughout, for example in the arm of the figure at left, a few in his leg, and a spot in the lower right. There is also an area of retouching of about 2 x 1 inches n the lower left beneath the figures legs and another of about 1 by .5 inches in the lower left corner. There may be some older retouching beneath the milky varnish. Offered in a carved dark wood frame.
