Rather unusual within Giovanni Battista's surviving oeuvre, this animated sheet of head studies drawn in pen and brown ink over black chalk is a wonderful collection of rapidly drawn sketches that demonstrate the way in which the artist, with such economy of line, could produce these delightful and lively character studies. Here Tiepolo has assembled a cast of head studies, of mainly bearded orientals, some wearing hats, in a frieze-like composition. Another similarly composed assembly of heads by Giovanni Battista was sold in these Rooms on 10 January 1995, lot 14 (A sheet of Studies of Heads of Orientals and Warriors).
