Condition
Lower right corner made up. Further small thin areas, lower edge. Small water stain, towards middle of left edge. Some light foxing and small stains throughout. Chalk generally in reasonably good condition.

Although the Haarlem Mannerists of the circle around Goltzius did on occasion combine red and black chalks, the further addition of white - in a manner that both anticipated and inspired the French 'trois crayons' - is something much more typical of the school of Rubens. The facial type also indicates that this is the direction in which we should look when attempting to locate this accomplished study in the correct artistic milieu.
