Condition
The canvas is original. There is abrasion to the corners and extreme edges of the work, with associated losses, and some instances where the canvas has worn through, none of which is visible in the present frame. The canvas undulates and there are faint stretcher bar marks towards the edges, most evident towards the right edge. There is a small area of very fine lines of cracking at the centre of the picture with further instances towards the centre of the upper edge and possibly one or two isolated instances elsewhere, only visible upon close inspection. There is an area of reticulation at the left edge above centre with probable more minor instances elsewhere, including towards the upper left corner. There are instances of minor studio detritus and matter in places and light surface dirt to the work. There is a thick layer of varnish. The thick layer of varnish makes for a difficult reading under ultra violet light, but there appears to be a small number of scattered very small instances of spot retouching to the work. The work is held in a painted composite wooden frame behind glass. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
