The Warrant, with fully printed text, records the award numbered 34 to George, Duke of Cambridge on 14 November 1895 and includes a citation recognising his military achievements and valour whilst in command of British Forces in the Crimea. According to the Duke’s diary he actually received it on 6th November from the Italian Ambassador and described it as ‘very amiably sent to me by the King of Italy on my withdrawing from office [as Commander-in-Chief of the Army] which I take as a great compliment...’, a view shared by Queen Victoria in sanctioning the Duke’s acceptance of the Order.
