Sale, W.H. Lane & Son Penzance, 31st October 2013, lot 150, where acquired by the present owner

The canvas appears original. There are minor undulations to the canvas at the corners, with further faint undulations visible upon close inspection at points along the left and right edges. There are some lines of cracking towards the left edge, just below centre, with some associated lifting and loss to the impasto. There are fine lines of reticulation to areas of the black and green pigments in the lower half, with further minor instances to the burgundy and dark blue pigment in the upper right quadrant. There is bloom to isolated areas of paint, most visible in the black pigment, and possibly one or two historic losses to impasto tips. There are some scuffs and isolated handling marks towards the edges of the painting, including one area of rubbing to the lower right corner with a few spots of loss, and a fingerprint in the black pigment in the lower right quadrant. There is some general surface dirt and studio detritus to the work. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fluorescence and retouching to the canvas, particularly to the aforementioned areas of loss and craquelure.
