Condition
The work has been executed on an artist's board, which has uneven edges integral to the work. The board is stable. Very faint diagonal abrasion in the sea lower left; otherwise the work appears in very good overall condition. Float mounted in a gilt plaster frame under perspex; unexamined out of frame. Ready to hang.

Jack B. Yeats’s career began as an illustrator and his early work consists of lively, figurative animations and his watercolours are a significant part of his oeuvre. The characters are often portrayed in a heroic manner, inspired by his reading of popular stories and the mythical heroes of folk life and ballads. Yeats held a longstanding fascination for the sea. As a child he grew up in Sligo, a small town on the edge of the Atlantic, populated by seafaring adventurers. The present work depicts one such character, whose heavily set features and strong gaze masterfully evoke a lifetime of memories that this ancient mariner has spent on the sea.
