Condition

Beautiful model, with quality carving. Catalogue photo is accurate. In good condition with scattered age cracks and minor shrinkage at joints, but nothing serious and canapé is very sturdy. Old re-glued break to one carved element. Re-gilded, with scattered losses to the gilding which could benefit from professional attention if desired. Feet re-tipped. Upholstery and two additional pillows in very good condition. Can be placed immediately.

Like many menuisiers in 18th century, Avisse came from a family of chairmakers and was based in the rue de Cléry in the Right Bank of Paris (now in the 2nd arrondissement).
The term canapé en corbeille (literally 'basket-shaped') designates a sofa where the seat rail and arm rests curve inwards at the ends, and was one of the many innovative forms developed by Parisian joiners during the Louis XV period.  This type of sofa is also referred to as an ottomane in the third volume of André-Jacob Roubo's L’Art du Menuisier (1772), plate 237 fig.1.
