A poem, written by the mountain monk Obaku Mokuan in the spring of 1672: 景物風情弄翠香
林泉溢目發禛祥
定回徒林逢佳客
膝促論懷到夕陽
檻外天華飄細雨
簾前燕子語春長
分明不昧娘生眼
却許入門勘法王
All creatures in clear weather now, enjoying blue-green fragrance;
Forests, streams overflow the eye with omens of good fortune!
Awakened from Samadhi, wandering the forest, meeting a treasured friend:
Knee to knee, discussing feeling ‘til the sun goes down.
Beyond the railing, Heaven’s corona sends floatingly light rain;
Before the blinds, swallows chatter endlessly of spring.
Clearly, now, no longer obscured, the young lady’s vision:
No now she’s permitted to enter the Gate, to examine the Dharma-King
