Sean Keating first visited the Aran Islands in 1914 and he was to return regularly until the 1960s. He greatly admired the local people he met there and representing them and their way of life, particularly their relationship with the sea, was to inform much of his work. Keating portrays the islanders' fortitude with strong charcoal work and the drawing emphasises his accomplished draughtmanship. It likely dates to the early 1960s when Keating revisited such subjects to meet the high demand from buyers at the time.
