Condition

The canvas is lined. Examination under UV light reveals extensive areas of retouching throughout the face and neck of the sitter, the largest of which are towards the neckline of the dress and the cheek and are approx. 4cm. in diameter. There are further flecks of retouching to the sitter's dress as well as retouching to all four edges, consistent with previous frame rubbing. There are further spots of retouching to the background, most prominently a vertical line above the sitter's hair and a vertical line above the 'a' within the signature, each approx. 2.5cm. long, possibly relating to repaired tears within the canvas surface. This work is in overall fair condition.

Jean and Dusty Negulesco (née Anderson) were darlings of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Born in Romania, Jean emigrated to America in 1927 having studied art in Vienna and Bucharest. Arriving in New York, Jean quickly moved west to find his fortune in Los Angeles. He found work as a sketch artist before moving on swiftly through a number of roles within the film industry, culminating in his appointment as a director for Warner Brothers. His first feature film was Singapore Women in 1941, followed by Johnny Belinda in 1948 for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. It was at this stage in his career that Jean met the actress and famed World War II pin-up Dusty Anderson. Dusty had starred alongside Rita Hayworth in Cover Girl and became renowned for her smouldering beauty following a photo shoot in the American propaganda magazine YANK. By 1946 the couple had married and Dusty began to feature in Jean’s films. Jean’s last film in Hollywood was the 1959 cult classic The Best of Everything. In 1960 the couple moved to Marbella, Spain where they remained for the rest of their lives. Jean is commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
