Condition
Executed on cream wove paper and not laid down. The sheet is affixed to the over mount at two places along the verso of the upper edge. The edges are unevenly cut. There is a 0.5 cm tear running vertically from the right part of the upper edge and another small nick to the upper left edge (not visible when framed). The sheet is lightly time stained and there is a faint mount stain along the edges which is not visible when framed. There are a few faint scattered specks of foxing in the background and some evidence of faint studio stains and handling marks in places. This work is in overall very good condition.

'Few artists in history have managed to express the spirit of their subjects with such economy of means. In his nudes, Schiele strove for purity of form; in his portraits, for purity of being [...] because Schiele plumbed the very souls of his subjects, his drawings remain as fresh and vital today as they were when made. There is a timelessness to Schiele's best work that speaks to the unchanging essence of humanity across time and space' (Jane Kallir, Egon Schiele: Drawings and Watercolours, London, 2003, p. 442).
