Lined. The surface presents well and the colors appear bright and fresh. There is barely visible craquelure in the lighter pigments and minor pigment separation in the darker pigments. Under UV: there are very widely scattered, finely applied small retouches visible, including a 1/2 inch diagonal line in the sky at upper left; and some finely applied inpainting to address craquelure in the trees at right and on the boat.

After nearly a decade in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon and earned praise from Charles Baudelaire and Émile Zola, Johan Barthold Jongkind returned to Rotterdam in 1855. This Dutch shipyard at sunset anticipates the Impressionistic marines for which Jongkind is most celebrated.

This lot will be included in the forthcoming Supplement to the Catalogue critique de l'Oeuvre graphique of the artist now in preparation by Brame & Lorenceau and Janine Sinizergues as Paysage en Hollande.

We would like to thank the Comité Jongkind Paris-La Haye for kindly contributing catalogue information and confirming the authenticity of this lot which will be included in their catalogue critique now in preparation; the archive reference number is H1078.
