Condition

Oil on paper, later lined with glue onto paper. The surface is slightly dirty. There are a few isolated breaks in the paper that are mostly imperceptible to the naked eye at lower left, lower right, and at upper right in the second tallest palm tree. There is an approximately 10 inches long, sideways 'Y' shaped break at upper center, the inpainting to which has discolored and is slightly visible to the naked eye. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly and appears streaky in a number of areas, most noticeably at lower right. There is inpainting to address the aforementioned breaks.

The present work depicts a sunset over the city of Jericho, which was deemed "the city of Palm Trees" in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 34:3; Judges 1:16, 3:13). Here the ancient walled city appears lush, atmospheric, and paradisiacal, enhanced by Albert Goodwin's personal interpretation of its "ancient" architecture and geography. Visitors to London's Royal Academy were transported by Goodwin's bird's eye view, adding to the fantastical effect.
