Reynolds had painted a number of portraits for Sackville Tufton, 8th Earl of Thanet (1733-1786) in the 1760s and 1770s. He had painted Thanet's mistress Nelly O'Brien (1762-64), his eldest children (in 1766-7), his wife (in 1770), and his younger son the Hon. John Tufton (in 1777). This receipt shows an account settled by the Earl's executors.
