Good overall condition. The shagreen presents with light soiling overall and some stable cracks. A few minute lacks of shagreen along some of the edges. The lapis elements present with traces of a few previous restorations. The Macassar ebony is slightly dried with some superficial scratches and a few minute chips of veneer. The ebonised varnished wood is dried, with some cracks and lifting of the veneer on several areas, there are some chips of veneer, some of them have been previously covered up to be less visually distractive. The mechanism opening the shagreen doors is fully functional. The mechanisms opening the lateral doors are a bit jammed.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Mrs Amélie Marcilhac.

A complete rediscovery, the masterpiece was acquired from Marcel Coard by the current owner in the 1970's and is one of only two known today.
It's sharply contrasting repeated vertical, horizontal and curved lines form an extremely geometric shape echoing the spirit of Cubism, a movement which inspired his designs in the 1920's and 1930's. The contrast of colours and materials (soft white shagreen, cold blue lapis lazuli stone and the warm veining of brown Macassar ebony) serve to further enhance its geometric pattern.
The opening of its doors and drawers is controlled by a central system of two push buttons, a sophisticated mechanism that was inspired by the furniture created by the great cabinetmakers of the 18th century.
A work that is at once modern, precious and luxurious, the design of the present lot went on to serve as the foundational design for the bedroom furniture of Marcelle Cocteau, sister in law of Jean Cocteau. Here Coard again combined lapis lazuli with Macassar ebony, this time replacing the white shagreen with mother of pearl.
