Condition
This work is in very good condition overall. The sheet is hinged intermittently along the reverse to the backing board. The edges of the sheet are deckled. There are scattered stray media marks to the edges of the sheet, the most visible being a blue mark to the center of the lower edge, inherent to the artist's working method. There is a small pigment crack 10 1/2 inches from the lower edge of the sheet. There appears to be a 1 1/2 linear mark from a palette knife to the lower right vertical edge, inherent to the artist's working method. Framed under Plexiglas.

Schooled in sculpture and ceramics, Mary Heilmann only began to paint when she moved to New York in the 1960’s. In the present work, the artist experiments with geometry and the flatness of the canvas, toying with space and form by using simple, bold lines. Heilmann is known to install paintings alongside benches and furniture of her own making, using her diverse artistic training to explore geometry and shape.
