拍品資料及來源
The attribution to Durameau was proposed by Louis-Antoine Prat, and has been kindly confirmed by Anne Leclair, having seen the drawing in the original. The bold and energetic use of the pen is characteristic of the artist's style, and the drawing can be compared to a study of Achilles crying over the body of Patroclus, in private collection, signed and dated 1767, which was once in the Chennevières Collection.1
As in other drawings by the artist, his pictorial approach to this rather large sheet is striking, with an abundance of white heightening used, in combination with washes, to define and enliven the nocturnal scene, lit by the fire that he has placed almost in the middle of his composition. Durameau seems to have begun to make such painterly, mixed media drawings even in his youth, especially when representing nocturnal scenes.2 Although no painting related to this composition is known, Durameau did, as Anne Leclair points out, execute some important religious altarpieces, such as The Death of St. Francis de Sales and The Martyrdom of Saint Cyricus and St. Julitta.3
