Condition
Good condition overall. As visible in the catalogue illustration the base is broken and one part is missing. At the rear the wood is eroded with some insect holes consistent with age and use within the culture. Both extremities of the wooden headdress are broken and glued. The metallic face is extremely well preserved.

Relevant d’une école Obamba localisée entre les villages d’Okondja et d’Otala, dans la haute vallée de l’Ogooué, cette figure de reliquaire Kota s’impose par sa conception singulière : « un visage à front bombé proportionnellement important ou en léger surplomb aplati (évoquant l’aspect anguleux du visage des statues mbété), pourvu d’une face étroite et d’une coiffe en cimier aux ailes très arquées et abondamment décorées » (Perrois, Kota, 2012, p. 60). Remarqué dès le début du XXe siècle, ce corpus - identifié par Frédéric Cloth sous le nom de « soleils d’Otala » - a très tôt intégré les collections prestigieuses d’André Breton, de Paul Eluard ou encore d’Helena Rubinstein. L’œuvre présentée ici est le remarquable témoin d’un corpus rare, tôt apprécié des plus grands amateurs d’art africain pour l’élégante complexité de ses formes.
