Good condition overall. Some small losses of stone on the proper left arm. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. White handwritten inventory number on the underside of the figure (inv. n° 15408) and Van Oosterom collection label (inv. n° OO. 025).

Cette œuvre s’impose dans la prégnance du visage ancestral qui capte l’attention par ses yeux concentriques et saillants. À propos d’une tête en pierre apparentée conservée au musée Barbier-Mueller (inv. n° 4099-14), Christian Kaufmann explique que « chez les Iatmul, ce motif est souvent associé à la représentation d’ancêtres sous l’aspect waken, un aspect qui permet et facilite la communication chamanique entre certains experts et des esprits du monde ancestral » (Peltier et Morin, Ombres de Nouvelle-Guinée, Arts de la grande île d'Océanie dans la collection Barbier-Mueller, 2006, p. 409).
