Condition

The canvas is lined. An elegant image reads well and some of the impasto can still be felt as with the decoration of the sleeve of the lady at right. The surface paint is slightly abraded. There is craquelure throughout and some associated loss mostly concentrated along the edges aside from the lady's hand that holds the mirror, which has a really small dot of loss. Retouches to the canvas are visible throughout, for example on the arms of the ladies, the face of the putti on the bottom, the background sky, and the dark wall on the background. Further reading under UV light is impeded due to a dirty varnish. The painting is offered in a gilded wood frame.

拍品資料及來源

The original version of this painting was probably made before 1530 and is now in a Private Collection, New York.1 The great popularity of the composition in the sixteenth century is demonstrated by the numerous copies it inspired. Another version by Titian, which was once owned by Charles I of England, is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 754).
