Having developed an imitable approach to painting, and a vernacular that cuts across multiple artistic movements, Sunaryo stands as one of Indonesia’s most prominent artists. With an oeuvre that speaks measures for the country’s thriving contemporary art scene, Sunaryo’s sought-after works are now included in prestigious collections and institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Harmonic Tremor is a recent painting that spans three panels and is animated by the artist’s brilliant use of colour, varied innovative techniques and forceful enactment of Abstract Expressionist heroism.
Sunaryo studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology before pursuing a Masters in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. The artist came to develop a committed appreciation for the profundity of a singular medium and deepened his conceptual understanding of media, pinning it as a starting point for his works. He consistently conducts research into the history of his materials and its relevant elements, applying this knowledge in his practice. Sunaryo’s artistic breakthrough was marked by his boasting discovery of the potential of resin, a highly viscous substance with a dense historical use in art and often applied in industrial processes. We see the result of his discoveries in the present lot, where Sunaryo embraces and draws attention to the tactile qualities of paint, distilling a confluence of influences through his own moving language.
The notion of preservation—its history, contemporary applications and its existential implications—remains a dominant aspect in Sunaryo’s works. A stunning expanse of colour and movement that overflows from panel to panel, Sunaryo’s Harmonic Tremor beautifully explores the very nature of materiality and immortalizes a masterful orchestra of the artist’s signature process. His paintings capture shifts between synthetic and natural, solid and liquid, frozen and fluid, and encourage viewers to delight in the subtleties of these transient states.
In Harmonic Tremor, Arin employs synthetic resin to create an expanse of immense fluidity and fluctuating tensions. The panels appear dipped in a bright yet lucid red amber hue, each covered with an outpour of white and black paint splatters—harmoniously gathering and dispersing across the surface. Through his instinctive spontaneity Sunaryo pays homage to Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis. By alternating splashes and drips, he allows the “natural character” of the resin liquid’s flow to emerge—creating a dense and rapturous aesthetic. The artist explains: “In the first glance, it probably looks like a flat landscape, but when we take a careful look we see its deepness.”1
Noticeably, Harmonic Tremor is left with a glossy sheen which creates a seductive surface for an intense palette. He has sprayed stark black pigment with expressive confidence, further alluding to graffiti techniques and aligning his industrial tendencies to John Chamberlain or Jean-Michel Basquiat. The tensions created and expounded within Arin’s magnificently kinetic works reflect an abandonment of the brush and embrace of chance. Harmonic Tremor is a titanic expression of the artist’s core pursuit—to capture the moment of immortalization and ultimately immortalize his own artistic creations.
