吾妻兼治郎自1961年起加入「龐圖運動」,不僅代表日本這亞洲重要體系之參與,亦是唯一以雕塑創作為主之成員。吾妻兼治郎1926年生於日本山形市一個銅藝世家,1949年考入東京藝術大學,1956年遠赴米蘭布雷拉美術學院進修,由此展開長達六十年的旅意生涯;1960年,藝術家進入現代雕塑大師馬里尼的工作室擔任助理。馬里尼一再提醒他「記住自己是日本人」,切勿在博大的歐洲文明中迷失自我。經此啟發,吾妻將工作室內的舊作清掃一空,矢志創造出「一種只有日本人方能感悟的非建構之美:如鐵之鏽蝕、屋之崩析,物質背後的無形象元素,也就是盈與虛的關係。」日本自古受禪宗影響,對「空性」自有獨到體驗;同時,二戰慘敗的教訓,亦讓這明治維新以來一路高歌猛進的國家,在戰後面對極大的社會與人心震盪。在遙遠的西方,藝術家獲得沉澱與思考的自由,最終發展出富於東方哲學精粹的現代雕塑「MU」系列。
「MU」是漢字「無」的意思,《MU-767》(拍品編號1008)乃本系列之典型,其抽象造型兼具幾何元素與符號性,完美打磨拋光的正面,象徵東方古典藝術的精微嚴謹;斑駁的基座,則彷彿則訴說著歷史之滄桑;而最重要的,是那標誌性的鏤空點與線,不僅打破物體的完整性,流露穿透的時間齧痕,富於超現實主義精神,更呼應著「龐圖運動」之符號。吾妻兼治郎於1963年-也就是「龐圖運動」臻於頂峰之年-獲得日本國立近代美術館賞,隨即在美國舊金山美術館及現代美術館等七個重要博物館巡迴展覽,作品更於1975年獲梵蒂岡博物館收藏,並由教宗保祿六世親手展示於館中,成為該館首件日本藝術典藏。《MU-767》正誕生於此時,並在2016年吾妻兼治郎人生壓軸個展中亮相,其版數為0/3,意即雕塑之原版,彌足珍貴。
