此葫蘆式鼻煙壺屬一套乾隆御製鼻煙壺之一，所製甚少，極為罕珍，工藝卓絕，意趣盎然，乃清代彩瓷鼻煙壺之至臻精品。乾隆初年，唐英任景德鎮御窰廠督陶官，期間佳作紛呈，此鼻煙壺即成於其時。葫蘆雙耳器形精巧，模製難度極高，所繪紋飾精細繁複，巧奪天工。瓜瓞綿綿，畫工超群，風格自然，瓜藤線條流暢靈動，亦不失隨性灑脫；細節刻畫玲瓏剔透，綠彩填葉，黑彩勾脈，筆觸細膩，襯於描金錦紋之上，更顯生動。

此套清宮舊藏鼻煙壺，其中一件仍藏北京故宮，載於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集．鼻煙壺》，香港， 2003年，頁201，編號311。其餘遍藏海外，其一於大英博物館，為大維德爵士舊藏，錄於康蕊君及霍吉淑，《大英博物館大維德爵士藏中國陶瓷精選》，倫敦，2009年，頁17，圖9；其二售於紐約佳士得1993年12月2日，編號466，現為劉修敬收藏，刊於劉修敬，《More Treasures from the Sanctum of Enlightened Respect》，香港，2002年，頁174，編號160。另有一對，乃 J & J 舊藏，其中之一為瑪麗及莊智博遞藏，售於香港邦瀚斯2010年11月23日，編號121，創出及至現時仍保持之瓷胎鼻煙壺拍賣世界紀錄。另一壺則為美國私人收藏，售於香港佳士得2014年10月7日，編號32。

此黑彩「乾隆年製」四字方框款亦見於一清宮舊藏黃地粉彩瓷鼻煙壺，現藏北京故宮，錄於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集．鼻煙壺》，前述出處，頁194，編號304，以及一藍地粉彩瓷鼻煙壺，繪山水並御題詩，為瑪麗及莊智博珍藏，售於香港蘇富比2014年11月24日，編號88。

林業強曾於其文章中提及，乾隆二十三年（1758年）十二月，高宗曾下旨將三件鼻煙壺交予景德鎮御窰廠，「照葫蘆式鼻煙壺、瓶式鼻煙壺樣式各做九件，腰式鼻煙壺樣做六件」。本拍品所屬此套御製鼻煙壺或為此處所述「九件葫蘆式鼻煙壺」之一，體現乾隆皇帝對鼻煙壺燒製要求之高，細節把控之嚴格，亦可見其個人藝術審美與品位。見林業強，〈乾隆年間御製粉彩鼻煙壺中國收藏系列〉，刊於《國際中國鼻煙壺協會學術期刊》，2003年秋季，頁6。

清宮內務府另一記檔中亦提及一瓷葫蘆鼻煙壺配銅鎏金蓋，或亦為此套御製鼻煙壺之一。據檔案載，乾隆四十六年九月三十日，內務府奉旨製成紅雕漆箱一件，十月初三又交出「洋琺瑯葫蘆鼻煙壺一件（珊瑚蓋）、瓷葫蘆鼻煙壺一件（銅鍍金蓋）、瑪瑙瓜式鼻煙壺一件（隨蓋）、白玉雙獸面鼻煙壺一件（玉蓋）」。

此器曾入 Mariel King 女士收藏。其祖父 J.R. Watkins（1840-1911年），於明尼蘇達州普萊恩維尤市創立 Watkins Incorporated，生產超過四百多種類的藥品、烘焙用材及家居用品，並至1940年代發展成全球最大規模的直銷公司。
