Condition
In overall good condition. There are scattered very minor chips to the extremities of the carving. Two corners possibly were bruised and then polished, or are contoured to the stone's inherent qualities. The stone has inclusions and natural fissures that enhance visual depth. There is also a translucence and softness to the stone not readily apparent in the catalogue image, and the stone is actually a slightly deeper green and a bit less yellow than the color in the printed catalogue.Please note that this lot includes a stand, frame or other component made from a type of Chinese hardwood, which, if exported, will require a CITES permit to leave the United States.

本品插屏，雕工深利，紋飾繁密，彰顯玉質通透潤亮。乾隆帝主張插屏及山子等玉雕須帶歷代名家畫意，本品風格技巧，均屬十八世紀御作典型。據載，高宗曾命工匠照其御藏古畫雕玉，其中包括五代山水大家關仝所作之《關山行旅圖》等。
插屏雕飾，描繪老子出關典故。據傳，老子因避亂世而欲雲隱，西行至函谷關時為關令尹喜阻攔求書，遂作成《道德經》首稿留於後人，而關令尹喜亦因遇老子後得道，號文始真人，仙階無上真人（見 Livia Kohn，，《Journal of Chinese Religion》，卷25（1），1997年，頁83-139）。
觀本屏雕工精巧，玉材上乘，製作時期應在乾隆平定准噶爾回部和闐、莎車等良玉盛產地以後。乾隆二十四年之前，玉材稀少，楊伯達曾述，至乾隆六年，清宮藏玉精者僅十件，殘者六十六件，見，《Jade》，倫敦，頁146。乾隆西征之後，玉材源源，玉雕由是流行於中國。如意館，宮廷作，聘巧匠製玉，並運玉材至宮廷所轄八作，其中以蘇州為首，製作監控嚴格，上奉朝廷者，必經細選。
