上款：「鄭盦」即潘祖蔭（1830-1890），咸豐二年（1852）探花，累官至工部尚書，精研鼎彝金石、碑版書畫，收藏富甲江南。
註：潘、吳皆吳中大族，且具通家之好，潘氏雖僅年長吳五歲，然輩分、科名、官階皆在其上，故冊中以「鄭盦夫子大人」尊稱。一八七二年，吳大澂寓京年許，與潘祖蔭過從最為密切，是年外放陜甘學政，乃於赴任前寫〈消夏六詠圖〉送贈。
唐代陸龜蒙有「消夏還消憂」句，所咏者，乃苦暑中，高朋小集雅室，把玩品鑒法書繪畫、金石碑版，復吟詩唱和，其樂融融，此亦明清文士常見之夏季雅集形式。潘祖蔭有〈壬申消夏詩〉，輯入〈滂喜齋叢書〉，收錄與張之洞各賦消夏六詠，與愙齋所繪六幀相符，且讀何碑、談何硯，一一交待，令人讀詩觀畫，如臨其境。是年三月至五月，吳大澂赴河北文安視察水災，五月間方返京，故錯過消夏雅集，潘祖蔭以詩見示，乞畫記之。是年他向愙齋請畫甚頻，遂以一卣相贈，並附書札：「卣一……祈哂存，不足以云潤筆也」。
