註:按圖錄所示,本幅寫於一九八九年,特為參加是次展覽而製。「南天門」即京劇劇目之「走雪山」,內容乃明代吏部尚書曹正邦遭權監魏忠賢構陷,滿門遇害,僅老僕曹福護主玉姐逃脫,主僕同往大同投親,遇大雪,曹福凍死,玉姐則得救。
據朗紹君教授研究所得:林風眠晚年戲劇人物題材中,屢以「南天門」入畫,畫面大致保留早期結構及形象模式,手法卻趨表現主義化,色調趨向沉鬱强烈、筆墨趨向强悍恣縱,戲曲藝術之精緻典雅、虛擬想像、空靈寫意,以至絢麗的裝飾性,幾乎都消失了,而變成畫家宣泄內在世界的符號及中介。
