予素怕作梅花，偶然執筆，不知是何意態。汝為研弟鑒可。三十年。壽。

註：本幅繪於一九四一年，時值戰亂，潘天壽隨校內遷，顛沛流離數年，暫得偏安重慶，任教國立藝專。「山家除夕無多事，插了梅花便過年」雖是清雅，更是其時生活艱苦之寫照。

畫家自題「素怕作梅花」，蓋是時創作以山水多，花卉少，本幅應藝友之屬而作，圖取斜勢，篆法寫梅，仿古瓷瓶僅半，斜側入畫，瓶內白梅三兩枝，自右往左橫伸而出，屈曲崛強，復以濃苔點幹，圈梅勾蕊，輔以長題，下承曲枝，直似蛟虬凌空騰升之勢，與後期佈局有異，處處流露乃師缶翁之影響。
