the naturalistically modelled wax head divided vertically into two halves, the left showing a skull with a hollowed eye socket and an extensive network of cranial nerves, the other half flayed revealing muscles and the eye, all raised on a rounded pedestal
Condition
It is in overall good condition with some typical stains, adhesions, minor scratches, occasional dents and small chips. There is also wear to some pigments with slight retouching at areas, especially to the brown muscles.

此件頭部蠟像原應為一件解剖模型。十八世紀時曾大規模製造此類模型，作為醫學生的視覺輔助用具。如今數件頭部解剖模型藏於佛羅倫薩人體解剖模型博物館，前身為自然歷史博物館工作坊。神聖羅馬帝國皇帝約瑟夫二世於1780年參觀博物館，十分讚賞此類模型，更訂購了一套留為自用。
製造逼真解剖蠟像模型這一傳統始於1771年的朱塞佩·費里尼。然而真正將其發揚光大的是意大利雕塑家克萊門特·蘇西尼。模型參考解剖圖和解剖學家如費力斯·封塔納及保羅·馬斯加尼等解剖的屍體。蘇西尼作品藏於多個歐洲收藏，包括卡利亞里的「克萊門特·蘇西尼解剖蠟像收藏」。倫敦科學博物館也有收藏類似作品（圖一）。
此座蠟像本為解剖教學之用，後加基座可能代表「死亡象徵」。自十六世紀起，骷髏被廣泛用於「死亡象徵」，因其代表人生短暫無常。《傳道書》（1.2）中將其稱為「虛空畫」: 「虛空的虛空，凡事都是虛空。」
