Overall in very good condition. The image is mounted as a hanging scroll temporarily affixed to board in an acrylic box measuring 265 by 99 by 5.5 cm.

《觀自在》為李華弌早期作於80年代探索期的罕見作品，亦被譽為其風格轉變期的典範傑作之一，其後他形成自己別具一格的山水畫風。移居三藩市並畢業於三藩市藝術學院之後，李華弌開始著手創作「元素」系列，藉以探究將傳統中國元素和媒材融入抽象形態與西方構圖風格的可能性。李氏曾於1970年代文革過後遊歷敦煌，本作描繪的觀音形象頗具莫高窟佛教壁畫之風。然與之不同的是，李氏將觀音襯於抽象背景之中，以灑脫不羈的筆觸及不同色調的水墨渲染，達到一種充滿粗獷紋理與動感的獨特視覺效果。佛經字句以拼貼形式入畫，取代中國傳統文人畫中的題畫詩。通過對截然不同的藝術形式與風格的融合，李氏在作品中展現出他對古代藝術與歷史的深刻理解和由衷欣賞、對傳統媒材的熟知掌握和爐火純青的畫法與技巧，以及受西方藝術風格與元素影響而塑造出的極具視覺震撼力的自我表現風格。
