時至近年,當代水墨才成為市場上備受重視的藝術門類,有著傳統水墨畫基礎或受傳統水墨啟發的藝術家們也因此受到矚目。此次所展現的拍品之所以能夠進入漢普斯特德收藏,並非受市場驅動,而是出於藏家對水墨媒材及傳統水墨淵源歷史的崇高敬意。然而,更令人讚嘆的是藏家對於中國藝術的遠見卓識。他們於1980年代末來到中國,很快就注意到中國當代藝術家的非凡造詣,認為他們能夠在國際藝壇發揮自己的影響力。他們對視覺藝術獨具慧眼,並被傳統國畫畫家的精湛技藝及充滿現代情懷的構圖深深打動,認為「每一幅作品都能改變我們看待世界的方式」。1995年的「八位中國當代畫家聯展」就是受他們中國藝術收藏的啟發而舉辦,展品包括喻慧和徐累的水墨作品。該展是國際藝術市場上較早的中國當代藝術作品展,不僅體現出對中國藝術的前瞻遠見,更揭示了當代水墨畫的收藏價值。當代水墨藝術不能歸為純粹的中國藝術,也不是純粹的西方藝術,但卻是真正的當代藝術。
肩負著歷史重擔的中國畫家正逐漸掙脫傳統藝術的束縛,嘗試拓展新的詮釋方法,不斷為幾百年來備受尊崇的水墨藝術注入新的生命。在中國,藝術家被尊為知識分子,在社會與學術層面都有責任為普羅大眾文化及精神修養的提升出一份力。蘇立文(Michael Sullivan)曾寫道,中國書畫沒有所謂純粹的形式美學,藝術與倫理道德是密不可分的。如同時期的玩世現實主義及政治波普藝術家們一樣,徐累和喻慧代表著利用媒材自身去反映政治理念的一代畫家;作為師法傳統的水墨藝術家,他們一方面傳承著古法,與此同時也賦予他們作品獨特的含義。
徐累既是當代文人,亦為中國藝術史學者,細緻展示獨特風格,與世界交流對話。徐氏在其畫中向觀者喚起超現實主義的概念,然而他以中國文人畫為根基,積極探索傳統美學。他將事物置於異乎尋常、無可存在的情境之中,糅合古代傳統法則與時間、空間的當代概念,同時以過去與現在、現實與夢境作為創作依據。
駿馬在徐氏的藝術語彙中扮演重要角色,時而纖柔雅致,藏於輕紗簾後;時而剛強有力,彷如唐代英勇戰馬。《斷夢》的駿馬比喻不言而喻的中國文學傳統。白馬身影從縫隙透出,象徵著時光流逝。白馬窺看房中兩張空椅,暗示另一主角的缺席與存留。徐氏的生動演繹帶領觀者投入神秘幻境,超越時間與空間。
