李元佳於五十年代在台灣求學,當時前衛藝術開拓者屈指可數,李元佳因此對歐洲和亞洲區的概念藝術發展影響深遠,但他的成就今依然鮮為人知,亦尚未獲得藝術市場重視。李元佳在1921年生於中國廣西省,先後遷居台灣、意大利,最後定居英國。他隨國民政府遷台,經歷「白色恐怖」時期的極權統治,但反而在此時開始了一段自我探索的歷程,逐漸孕育出藝術思想。他受到多方面的藝術和哲學思想啟發,例如遠古洞穴畫、書法、老子、禪道佛學以至康定斯基;其藝術思想流露深刻的精神體會和思想。李元佳是東方畫會創立成員,該團體在藝術圈甚具影響力,提倡藝術表達不應受形式所限。此外,他在台灣服兵役,能接觸的資源極為有限,故此他只用基本媒材創作,憑著個人體悟和方法創作出新穎獨到的藝術。李氏個性沉靜內向,但畫風卻恣意無拘,體現他「全然收放」的核心理念。
李元佳目睹台灣的政治情勢日趨緊張,在意大利家具商及藝術贊助人丁諾·伽文納(Dino Gavina)的幫助下移居意大利。在當地,他加入了「Il Punto」畫會,該團體的理念是在藝術中融入深刻的精神體驗;一如該會的首本圖錄所言,成員力求「單純靜觀的表現」,不分國族界限。李元佳的作品概念性更加明顯,其書法筆劃更深思熟慮,用色以黑、紅、金、白為主。這些反映他希望「繪畫肉眼看不到的事物:純粹、簡單、美和世界的奧妙」(《觀‧點─李元佳回顧展第一冊》)。他的思想複雜而且看似矛盾:他一方面務求使自己的藝術接近大眾,相信要欣賞其藝術之美,須同時欣賞其簡單之處;另一方面,他明白「事物越簡單,它就越有可能被誤解甚至無視」。 「點」是李元佳創作歷程中的核心觀念,又稱為「宇宙點」,它出現在畫面中,象徵其理論概念,是「無限空間、一切的起始與終點」。
因此,這兩幅作品不只見證了藝術家的內心探索和藝術歷程,亦可見他嘗試減少畫面色彩,並積極運用中國象徵符號。畫面的單色背景代表宇宙之無艮,每一筆、一線、一點,皆代表一切造物的起始和終結。在兩幅作品分別只有紅、黑、綠三色及紅白二色,每種顏色因而更突出,有了各自發揮的空間;藝術家的筆觸在靜謐無邊的負空間中尤覺暢快淋漓。李元佳的傳統東方哲學思想根深蒂固,同時展現出創新的概念藝術和獨特的宇宙觀,同時令人「強烈地感覺到力量和空間的存在」(《觀‧點─李元佳回顧展第三冊,詩》)。
