Li Yuan-Chia is an acclaimed conceptual artist who gained early recognition internationally when invited to present his work as part of the Ton Fan group at the Fourth São Paulo Biennial and the First International Young Artists Exhibition in Tokyo in 1957. Li moved to Italy in 1962 and later to London in 1966 where his works were frequently exhibited at Signals Gallery, as well as Lisson Gallery. His move from Taipei is reflected in his art where he draws inspiration from Western abstraction and incorporates it with Eastern philosophy. Li's oeuvre ranges from painting and photography, to sculpture and participatory kinetic installations. Most recently, his works have been exhibited posthumously in retrospective exhibitions at the Camden Arts Centre, Tate Modern (2014-2015), and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2014), each of which reappraise his role in the development of conceptual and abstract Chinese art.
