三十載以來,何懷碩的藝術成就有目共睹,他筆下的孤影、晚照、迷林展現深厚的中國文化底蘊,更描繪出深沉的心境。何氏力倡藝術家之個人風格需自然發展、不應箝制,認為現代藝術中刻意而為的前衛變異,只是科技披著進步外衣所致的幻象。1 他認為藝術家應採國畫技法與結構,以傳統為體,當代構圖為用。1997年,是次上拍作品《夢幻之河》參展懷古堂及聯齋之聯合展覽「嘉樹新苗:現代中國水墨畫展」,該畫展探討國畫之現狀與未來展望,備受關注。
何懷碩追隨傅抱石、黃賓虹、林風眠等大師足跡作畫,其中林風眠畫作飽含詩意、情感洋溢,糅合西洋技法於水墨,對何氏影響最為深遠。何氏摒棄畫面虛實的平衡,將空間填滿,甚得林氏遺風。本作描繪淺水平沙,上有參差樹林,尺幅宏大,為何氏獨特的「不美」之美的最佳典例。1969年,何氏出版藝術論《苦澀的美感》,謂悲劇實乃永恆靈感泉源。此情體現於早期作品中,在《崖村》(拍品編號550)中的黑暗山巒,抑或《秋韻》(拍品編號545)中的迷離異境可見一斑。1980年代,何氏作品之色彩仍然維持哀愁基調,但亦引進不少歐遊期間所得之主題,諸如《亱歌》(拍品編號513)中的建築及開花藤蔓。此時期,何氏作品在台灣以至歐美各大博物館展覽中頻頻曝光,當中可見他不時重訪某些特定意象,諸如月光(拍品編號508)及橋上人像(拍品編號516)﹐數度出現在他悲愴濃重的畫境之中。他寫道:「我個人的人是偏向於藝術只能是悲劇感的表現,所以它只能有苦澀的美感;反離開了此苦澀美感,任何悅人的甜性的美感,那些被稱為生動、嬌艷、秀麗的,與自然在流動中所偶有的悅目賞心之美,那非人文的,那稱為自然美的,都難以冠上「藝術」的名號。」2
