The figure is in overall good condition with just light surface wear. There are also some natural imperfections and areas of pitting to the stone.

青白玉質，帶褐色沁斑。犬前肢伏於地，後腿半蹲，回首，眼圓睜，大耳半起，身長瘦腰，背部刻肋骨，前肢交疊，長尾翻捲，一副機靈模樣。
此犬雕琢精細，工藝嫻熟，造型寫實生動，刻畫細膩，神形兼備。
如此玉琢之臥犬，始見於有唐一朝，唐例可參考熙墀所藏，載於《中國肖生玉雕》，香港藝術館，香港，1996年，編號68。如此件姿態閑靜肖生之玉，栩栩如生，宋至清初盛行，或為鎮紙、或為清玩，極具意趣。
何鴻卿爵士有藏一例，斷代為宋，收錄於香港市政局與敏求精舍聯合主辦《中國玉雕》，香港，1983年，編號134，以及 Jessica Rawson，《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing》，倫敦，1995年，圖版26:10，作者在書中指，古人或佩戴玉犬，以炫其狩獵之技，頁367。知柔齋舊藏也有一白玉例，也斷代為宋，並展於《玲瓏玉雕－玉人、玉獸、玉飾》，前述出處，編號85，後售於香港蘇富比2008年10月8日，編號2312。另見一明朝玉臥犬，原屬沐文堂藏，近售於香港蘇富比2016年12月1日，編號40。
