A similar bowl, in the Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau, is illustrated in Monique Crick, Chine Impériale. Splendeurs de la Dynastie Qing (1644-1911), Geneva, 2014, pl. 73; a pair was sold in our New York rooms, 19th March 2007, lot 95; and one of slightly smaller size, inscribed with the character bing, from the De An Tang collection, included in the exhibition A Romance With Jade, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2004, cat. no. 114, was sold in these rooms, 27th April 2003, lot 1. Compare also vessels of similar shape, but lacking the raised band at the rim, such as one sold at Christie’s New York, 15th September 2009, lot 127.

A special characteristic of this vessel is the raised border on the lip which may be inspired by the fitted metal rims which were used on contemporary cloisonné and painted enamel wares produced in the Palace Workshops.
